With his new album, Nothing But Time, Monster Mike Welch takes a searing, blistering stance as a contemporary blues artist to be reckoned with. From the first note, it is clear that these blues are personal. The album’s 14 tracks (two from Robert Johnson, one from Buddy Guy, and another from George Harrison) feature 10 originals.
Throughout the sprawling (in a good way) recording, produced by Kid Andersen, Welch is in a state of play with remarkably gifted musicians and backup singers. A highlight is Welch’s revved up rendition of Harrison’s “I Me Mine.” It is a bold interpretation, full of fearless choices that pay off.
It is clear that Monster Mike Welch is doing exactly what he should, and clearly it is what he loves doing. All in all, Nothing But Time is a rousing good time.
