Ghost Hymns, Americana/Roots guitar master William Lee Ellis’s fourth release for Memphis-based label Yellow Dog Records, is one of the most fascinating bluegrass/blues/roots/mountain/folk albums around. Until now, I was not familiar with this unique artist. The opportunity to explore his previous output is exciting. Attention must be paid to the impeccable sound quality of this album as well. The recording and production are top notch. The entire endeavor has the sound of one “first take” after another.
The music, all original compositions, were inspired by encounters along his travels, which opens the door for an intriguing set of global influences. It’s almost as if Ellis has delivered the variety of material and techniques of an entire summer music festival on this one album. For anyone searching for a deeper experience with music than usual, this is a definite discovery.
