Popa Chubby‘s new album, Live at G. Bluey’s Juke Joint NYC (on Gulf Coast Records), is the label debut live double-CD set from the solid New York City-based blues guitar slinger (aka “The Beast from the East”). It’s a collection of songs that convey the irrefutable conclusion that he (and his stellar band) can do it all. On the 19 varied, gritty, spirited, brave tracks Popa Chubby (guitar and vocals), is backed by his all-star “Beast Band,” which consists of Mike Merritt – bass; Mike Dimeo – keyboards; and Stefano Giudici – drums.
The material is a blend of new and classic, with each track finding opportunities for the players to spread their musical wings and fly… and then soar. Popa Chubby’s searing guitar solos are matched by his direct vocals. The track list is structured brilliantly so that each song connects to the one before, taking the direction even further, but in a surprising way. By the time you’ve turned the volume up several times, the album is over and it has become one of those “live” albums that you will count on for years to come.
Believe it or not, Live at G. Bluey’s Juke Joint NYC was recorded at G. Bluey’s Juke Joint in Long Island City, New York, on October 24 and 25, 2022 (which hosted a lively crowd both nights). How could it not, with a band this inviting? Popa Chubby knows how to build a performance, heightening the drama and including spontaneous diversions until the room is all in on a musical thrill ride. The album captures that energetic vibe, while also bringing moments of intimacy that place the listener in the front row. There’s nothing like a satisfying blues concert to leave you wanting more.
