New Jazz: Tomas Janzon — ‘Nomadic’

Tomas Janzon‘s latest album, Nomadic, is a sly, subtle affair. It’s the kind of album that will inspire you to kick off your shoes, perhaps pour a cocktail, and relax into your favorite music-appreciating seat. The Stockholm-born guitarist blends different styles and influences through eleven tracks. It’s a tender take on inventiveness, offering crafty interpretations of a blend of mostly original (and a few cover) songs.

Tomas Janzon has a definite gift for composing songs that are complex, yet appear simple. This makes repeated listening all the more enjoyable. His musicianship (on guitar) is equally seductive—especially on “Letter from JSB”). Throughout, he is joined by Steve Nelson (on vibraphone), Hilliard Greene and Jeff Littleton (on bass), and Chuck McPherson and Tony Austin (on drums).

If you enjoy—truly enjoy—the actual act of listening to jazz, then this album will please you immensely.
