New Jazz: Rob Dixon/Steve Allee Quintet —’Standards Deluxe’

Saxophonist Rob Dixon and pianist Steve Allee have collaborated for years, and the recent album—Standards Deluxe—proves that their artistry is profound when combined.

Their creativity, especially when playing with bassist Nick Tucker, drummers Greg Artry and Kenny Phelps, and trumpeter Derrick Gardner, is in fine form as they take the listener through a well-balanced selection of standards and originals. The goal achieved is a performance in a classic jazz style. It is crisp, smooth, and personal.

Vocalist Amanda King provides the proverbial cherry on top of the very substantial goodness that the band delivers. Her choices are clear, her instrument is warm, and she co-mingles with the saxophones in a most satisfying way.

Musicians:
Rob Dixon (tenor and soprano saxophone), Steve Allee (piano), Amanda King (vocals), Derrick Gardner (trumpet), Nick Tucker (bass), Greg Artry (drums, tracks 1-6), and Kenny Phelps (drums, tracks 7-12).
