New Blues: Mitch Woods — ‘Happy Hour’

Label: MoMojo Records

With their new album, Happy Hour, Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s are upholding a great American blues musical heritage. Although this has been the case for five impressive decades, they sound as fresh, playful, and energetic as ever.

There’s a contagious spirit that fills the air when these musicians play and, quite frankly, slay. Blending classic rhythm and blues tunes, virtuoso instrumental skills, Mitch Woods’ highly engaging vocals, and up-to-the-minute lyrics, Happy Hour is a collection of tracks where each one stands alone as a one-act entertainment. From the high energy of “Jukebox Drive” to the dejection of “Cryin’ For My Baby” to the stylish “Mojo Mambo,” the album lets the music do its thing—cover emotional territory while impressing with invention.

The musicians on this sold album are: Mitch Woods (piano, vocals, producer); Kid Andersen (guitar, engineering/mastering); Larry Vann (drums); Dave Somers (saxophones); Kedar Roy (bass). Each of these cats takes the spotlight when necessary and combine to create what seems like a dozen of the best players you’ve ever heard. Enjoy life a little by seeking out Mitch Woods et al in their upcoming live performances. (I’m tempted to fly back home to Santa Rosa, CA just to bring my mom to their show!)
