They’re just about the most consistent band out there. Fans of contemporary blues and blues/rock are in luck: The Fabulous Thunderbirds have released their first new studio album in eight years, and yes, it’s another solid album. Founder Kim Wilson leads the way (vocals and harmonica) on Struck Down, the band’s 50th anniversary release, which features nine new songs, co-written by Wilson and blues guitarist Steve Strongman.
There’s just something comforting about knowing that The Fabulous Thunderbirds are making new music. You can’t count on all the good things in life seeming to last forever, but with them there’s evidence to the contrary. Anytime I long to return to nights in the audience on an warm night in Austin, Texas, I put on one of their classic albums. This disc is going to be placed in that agreeable pile. Where else can you find such an impressive lineup of not only guests, but also band members? But don’t think for a second that this album is all about the guests. These songs are first and foremost about the Thunderbirds soaring as they always have.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds are a band who many exceptional musicians have been part of over the band’s continuous, legendary run. These days, the band includes: Kim Wilson, Bob Welsh, Rudy Albin Petschauer, Steven Kirsty, and Johnny Moeller. Guest artists on the album include: Steve Strongman, Billy Gibbons, Elvin Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Mick Fleetwood, Terrance Simien, Dean Shott, Chris Ayries, Rob Szabo, and Keb’ Mo.’
