New Jazz: Dave Stryker — ‘Stryker With Strings Goes To The Movies’

Just when this year’s Oscar nominations have reminded us of how far the quality of film scores and songs have fallen, along comes jazz guitarist Dave Stryker‘s new album—Stryker With Strings Goes To The Movies. This collection of sublime performances of exceptional material restores faith in the importance of a movie’s aural screenplay. Since this year’s Oscars telecast will do away with the performances of all the Best Original Song nominees, perhaps Dave Stryker and company can serve as the house band, taking us in and out of the commercial breaks, and maintain our love of movie music.

The Emmy-winning success of the 2023 PBS special, Wes Montgomery at 100: A 100th Birthday Tribute Concert, ignited a spark of inspiration in guitarist Dave Stryker and arranger-conductor Brent Wallarab. This celebrated tribute to jazz legend Wes Montgomery, which captivated audiences with its soul-stirring performances and impeccable arrangements, set the stage for an ambitious new project that explored the realm of Hollywood’s timeless classic movie themes.

Their shared passion culminated in the recording of 11 classic movie themes, reimagined with a 30-piece studio orchestra. This labor of love was not just about reviving beloved tunes; it was about creating a lush, cinematic soundscape that honored the original compositions while infusing them with fresh, contemporary energy. Enjoy!
