
Mud Morganfield’s new album, Deep Mud (release date” September 26, on Nola Blue Records) is a reminder of the power of great Chicago blues . Morganfield, the eldest son of Muddy Waters, is dedicated to preserving the Chicago blues tradition, and his his latest music is another solid contribution. This collection, recorded at JoyRide Studio with prominent Chicago musicians, reflects the approach his father established during the genre’s formative period and contributed significantly to the development of the electric Chicago blues ensemble style.
Speaking of the ensemble, notable contributors include Studebaker John on harmonica for most tracks; Rick Kreher and Mike Wheeler alternating on guitar; Melvin “Pooky Styx” Carlisle on drums throughout; E. G. McDaniel and Rodrigo Mantovani splitting bass duties; Sumito Ariyo Ariyoshi and Roosevelt Purifoy on piano and organ; Phil Perkins on trumpet for two tracks; and backing vocals by Felicia Collins, Kirsten Lowe, Jacole Avent, and Demetrias M. Hall.
The tracklist underscores Morganfield’s dedication to his father Muddy Waters’ repertoire and a commitment his own original compositions.
