The title says it all. Heroes is a highly successful tribute to the musicians who have significantly contributed to Rick Keller’s growth as both a saxophonist and composer. The album is comprised of original compositions, each referencing the distinctive sounds and styles of eminent artists such as Miles Davis, Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, The Brecker Brothers, Ralph Towner, Alan Holdsworth, and Bill Bruford, among others. From the tracks here, it is obvious that Keller has a keenly observant ear. The musicians he honors have clearly had a profound impact on his musical approach, and you can hear it in every note.
What’s even more impressive is the way that Keller shapes the material to convey his own velvet style, And boy does he.
