The Dave Wilson Quartet’s When Even Goes East created exactly the atmosphere I was yearning for when I reached for a new jazz album to listen to today. Every melody was given full exploration, while establishing a mood that I wish could continue far beyond the album’s playing time. I guess what the repeat button is for.
This album is a solid introduction to the Dave Wilson Quartet. The disc showcases his range of influences and some exceptional songs that reinforce the notion that Dave Wilson (tenor and soprano saxophone) is at his best when playing and collaborating with equally strong (and sensitive) musicians. For the record, the fellow players on this album are Jesse Green (piano), Evan Gregor (bass), Daniel Gonzalez (drums), and Lenny Castro (percussion on several tracks).
A standout track is “Adios,” which receives a bittersweet performance here, with an emphasis on the sweet. Equal attention should be paid to Wilson’s original compositions. They offer each musician ample opportunities to shine. The foundation of each track is a shared responsibility, and the rest always make total emotional sense.
