New Jazz: Tierney Sutton & Tamir Hendelman — ‘Spring’

After a long, cold winter, what a joy to be sent a review copy of a CD that I was planning to purchase. Especially a collection of songs about love and renewal. My love of good music, which I am, thankfully, supplied with on a regular basis, means that I had the release date of the upcoming album from pianist Tamir Hendelman and vocalist Tierney Sutton already written on my calendar. The name of the album is Spring, and as far as I’m concerned, it can’t arrive soon enough. The release date is April 3, 2026.

For those who love sublime jazz, Award-winning jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman and nine-time Grammy-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton is a perfect pairing. The result is a refresher on these two artists’ individual gifts, but also how well they complement each other. Their rapport is evident on every track.

What stands out most throughout the album is the way that they listen to each other while working together. It is not always obvious who is leading or who is following. Instead, there is a continuous moment-to-moment invention occurring. But it is not informed with the seeming insignificance of what improvisatory techniques that can sometimes blur a song’s effect. Each song on this album delivers a single interpretation. Much like the season of spring itself, it is a refreshing and totally engaging experience.
