Musicians: Tomas Janzon – guitar; Nedra Wheeler – bass; Tony Austin – drums (tracks 1–6); Chuck McPherson – drums (tracks 7–10).
Sometimes a guitar is not just a guitar. Depending on the song, Tomas Janzon plays guitar as if he’s playing every instrument around. There’s a specific quality to each performance that imbues the song with just the right emotional touch. It’s impressive, and it makes Janzon’s new album worth exploring.
Growing up in the 1960s and 70s, I was introduced to jazz through my parent’s Wes Montgomery albums. Subtle, refined, and—to this day—memorable. Tomas Janzon evokes a similar response. The tracks on this album all feature trios—the perfect combination of instruments to allow Janzon’s dreamy sketches to come to life. The version of “Six on Five” included on the album is sublime. Highly recommended.
