Rafael Nadal Retires In 3rd Set At Miami Open

The Miami Open remains one of the big tournaments Rafael Nadal has never won; he’s 0-4 in finals there. Looks like he’ll have to wait until 2017 to try to change that.

“It was getting worse and worse and worse,” said Nadal. “I get a little bit scared — too dizzy. I felt I was not safe, so I decided to go. I wanted to finish the match, but I seriously couldn’t.” The dizziness resulted in Nadal retiring from his second-round match against Damir Dzumhur at the Miami Open. The 94th-ranked Dzumhur won 2-6, 6-4, 3-0. Today’s match marks his first career victory against a top-10 player.

Before he retired, Nadal twice called for a trainer, and had his blood pressure checked. He  resumed play both times. When the 14-time grand slam champion called it a day, the crowd actually began to boo. They just weren’t used to seeing Nadal succumb to the heat and humidity that is typical of most tournaments on the ATP calendar. Nadal hasn’t quit during a match since the 2010 Australian Open (when he was in a quarterfinal against Andy Murray).

Hey, it happens to the best of them (especially on the hot, hard courts);  even Roger Federer withdrew Friday because of a stomach virus.

Other notable matches:

  • Andrey Kuznetsov defeated fourth seed Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-3.
  • Sixth seed Kei Nishikori defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2 7-6(4).
  • Jack Sock defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 3-2, when Stakhovsky retired with back issues.
