Vanessa Collier — Meeting My Shadow

Meet Vanessa Collier (recently nominated for a 2017 Blues Music Award and fresh off the first leg of her 2017 European tour with the Blues Caravan) and her new album, Meeting My Shadow. The disc is a wonderfully comprehensive introduction to the saxophonist, vocalist, and songwriter. Collier can seemingly do it all, and the new release offers a chance to hear firsthand the many facets of this fascinating artist.

Joining Collier on the eleven tracks are: Laura Chavez (guitar), TK Jackson (drums, percussion, organ, and background vocals), Daniel McKee (bass), Charles Hodges (organ, clavinet, piano, and Wurlitzer), Mark Franklin (trumpet and Flugelhorn), Josh Roberts (slide guitar), Brenda Jackson (organ), Lenny Bradford (bass) and Nicholas Stevens (drums).

The album is a balanced blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul. I’m guessing that Vanessa Collier is a hoot to experience live, since her abundant charisma comes through here—no easy feat on a recording. It must be the unstoppable outcome of an artist doing what she truly loves.
