New Jazz: Joe Syrian Motor City Jazz Octet — ‘A Blue Tine’

On A Blue Time, drummer Joe Syrian and the versatile Motor City Jazz Octet offer new takes on some classic material. Made up of seasoned musicians who blend rock, pop, blues, and Latin influences into their distinctive jazz sound, Syrian and his accomplished octet return with their second release on the Circle 9 label. Drawing from an inventive mix of jazz standards, celebrated Latin pieces, and treasured pop songs, Syrian recasts each track as a fresh exploration that invites listeners to hear familiar music in new ways. Featuring the octet alongside guest artists vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan and percussionist Luisito Quintero, A Blue Time is designed to connect with both longtime fans and new audiences.

Each track is successful in its own way, with my personal favorite being the 3/4 time version of “Norwegian Mood.” With the simple time change, it frees the song to fly in an exciting new manner.
