Portland isn’t one of the regular stops on the ATP tour, but in a few weeks it will be the home court for the U.S. Davis Cup team.

In 1981, the Americans beat Australia at Memorial Coliseum 5-0 in the Cup semifinals. That team (led by John McEnroe) went on to win the so-called “World Cup of Tennis” that year by beating Argentina in the final in Cincinnati. Three years later, the U.S. Davis Cup team returned to Portland, again for a semifinal showdown against Australia. The Americans won the Final Four pairing but ultimately lost to Sweden.

The U.S. Davis Cup team came to Memorial Coliseum for a third time in 2007. The squad won its record 32nd and most recent championship by defeating Russia 4-1, with Bob and Mike Bryan clinching the title with a straight-set doubles victory.

The U.S. defeated Australia in the Davis Cup first round earlier this year. Croatia beat Belgium. Now the team returns again to the Portland area (to Beaverton, Oregon, to be exact). The best-of-five-match “tie,” as Cup series are called, will be a quarterfinal showdown between the U.S. and Croatia. Tickets are on sale now.

The July 15-17 battle between the U.S. and the 2005 Cup kings will take place at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. For more information, click . Retired four-time major champion Jim Courier is the U.S. Davis Cup captain. He is expected to select World No. 17 John Isner and World No. 25 Jack Sock to play singles, with the reliable Bryan brothers, 16-time major champions, to play doubles. Croatia probably will feature 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic.
