We know how this fan at Wimbledon felt last week.
Steve Johnson (ranked number 25 in the world) is the number one seed at the Tennis Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island this week.
What more can you say? With today’s withdrawal of Vasek Pospisil, there are very few reasons to go put up with the high prices and low hospitality of the formerly glamorous city by the sea. The first-round loss of local favorite Jared Donaldson (to Donald Young) denies the tournament the chance for some good ol’ home state enthusiasm the rest of the week. Fear not—Jared, one of the rising Americans worth watching, will be back next year!
Will they ever admit that a tournament on grass, post-Wimbledon, is just a snooze of an event? The players want to move on to the next surface. Why would they risk slipping on the grass in Newport just before the hard court season begins (or the Olympics, for that matter)?
