New Bluegrass: Blue Highway — ‘Original Traditional’

Blue Highway — ‘Original Traditional’

Label: Rounder Records

Release date: 9/9/16

Bluegrass supergroup Blue Highway—recently voted “Favorite Bluegrass Band Of All Time”’ by the readers of Bluegrass Today—is about to release its 11th studio album, Original Traditional. It’s an all-original traditional bluegrass record featuring the group’s new dobro player (Gaven Largent). He will join the rest of the incredibly precise band (Shawn Lane, Tim Stafford, Wayne Taylor and Jason Burleson) on their upcoming tour.

These are original songs that capture the substance of traditional bluegrass music—the spirit, themes, and topics—that is familiar to fans of the genre. With melting harmonies and spark-inducing picking, they’ve always had a knack for making bluegrass that is gently, persuasively modern, while keeping it based in tradition. There is a no-frills, straight bluegrass approach to this album, which leaves plenty of room for the instrumentals to let loose and really fly. By looking back, Blue Highway (which is celebrating their 23rd year together) has always looked forward, and this album epitomizes that. So, if it’s a new ‘good ole’ bluegrass album you are hungering for, this album will definitely satisfy.

Essential Downloads: “Don’t Weep For Me,” “Hallelujah,” “Wilkes County Cay.”
