Sparky Parker must be a Houston hometown favorite, but with a delivery as solid as his, he’s sure to make new fans around the globe. In the Dark is a thrilling introduction to a future blues/rock great.
The album is produced by Parker and recorded, mixed and mastered (radiantly) by Rock Romano, In the Dark features the Sparky Parker Band: Sparky Parker – guitars, vocals; Phillip Lock – bass, backing vocals; and Kevin Berry – drums, with additional keyboards/organ by William Gorman.
In the Dark consists of seven original tunes, plus riveting covers of songs by The Rolling Stones (“Dead Flowers”), Slim Harpo (“Shake Your Hips’) and Bobby “Blue” Bland (“I Wouldn’t Treat a Dog (The Way You Treated Me).” While his vocals are clear, bright, and inspired, it is his guitar work that really showcases Parker’s gifts. There’s a push/pull quality to his guitar performances that result in several satisfying surprises. What sets off occasional flashes of searing brilliance is a consistent self-restraint that grounds it all in an impressive aura of suspense. Parker has mastered the mystery of how to make one listen. Do your love of music a favor and follow his compelling lead.
