Grace Potter: ‘Daylight’

Grace Potter — Daylight

The chords take you so far. Then the ample voice, starting smoky and erupting into searing hot spurts, takes it from there. Together, they achieve what only some of the greatest albums in rock history have accomplished. Grace Potter’s new release, Daylight, is so good it might even have you convincing yourself that you should start going to live concerts again. Be warned, there’s only one Grace Potter around… so save all that trouble only for her show. Personally, I’m kind of hoping she’ll star in a new production, a rethinking of, I don’t know, how about Jesus Christ, Superstar? …as Mary Magdalene, Jesus, and Judas, of course.

But back to what is probably the album of the year. It’s titled Daylight, and it brilliantly captures that transitional passage of time and perspective (not to mention Potter’s own shift toward a full throttle rock vocal delivery). It is an unfiltered confessional experience. Bound to be the first hit off the collection is “Release” — a piano and vocal only prayer that gathers all of the necessary inner thoughts and feelings that allow moving on, so that the daylight can be found.
