Leeann Atherton’s new album, Good God (on Rainstorm Records), finds the Austin, Texas-based singer sharing some songs that clearly inspired her, as well as the remarkable results of that inspiration. With soulful grit, Atherton delivers songs of hope and positivity. It’s a collection that leans into the spiritual, blended with roots, gospel, Americana, and soul. It’s covers the familiar—in addition to three original songs, Good God features Atherton’s interpretations of material written or popularized by Lieber and Stoller (“Saved”), Jackie DeShannon (“Put a Little Love In Your Heart”), Joe South (“Games People Play”)—and the new—three original songs—and is one of those astutely produced albums that leads the listener through some satisfying emotional territory. Ten seconds into Atherton’s sincere rendition of “How Great Thou Art” and you are reminded of the power that comes from an artist communicating that which they truly believe. There’s no getting around conviction, and the following three minutes and twenty seconds proves it.
