Saxophonist and vocalist Greg Piccolo rose to prominence with Roomful of Blues, spending 25 years as the band’s tenor sax player and lead vocalist. Then he formed Heavy Juice, a group that gave him room to pursue his own musical direction. On this album, Piccolo handles all lead vocals and tenor sax, joined in the impressive horn section by two members of The Texas Horns: Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff on baritone sax and Al Gomez on trumpet. Heavy Juice features Shinichi Otsu on keys, Dean Shot on guitar, Paul Tomasello on bass, and Bob Ruggiero on drums; as well as vocal group 14 Karat Soul.

Who Knows What the Future Holds represents Greg Piccolo’s alternate career as a singer/songwriter. All of the songs on the album are originals written over the years, but recorded here for the first time. In a way, the album is an engaging collection of songs that are perfect for capturing the spirit of the summer—perhaps because it recalls the instant appeal of AM radio past. These songs combine energy and wit and achieve surprising emotional levels that are frequently of the joyous variety. What a refreshing twist to put on an album and find yourself tapping your feet all while smiling ear-to-ear. If the future holds more songs like these, then everything’s clearly going to be alright.
