New Jazz: Rob Dehlinger and the Alpha Rhythm Kings — ‘Party Time’

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED if you want to enjoy yourself.

On Party Time, trumpeter/composer/vocalist Rob Dehlinger and The Alpha Rhythm Kings deliver an exciting album of swing and blues. From the sound of it, they must put on a fantastic live show.

Party Time offers 11 tracks, including four originals and several unexpected selections. It opens with ‘All Cats Join In,’ composed by Ray Gilbert, Eddie Sauter, and Alec Wilder and first recorded by Benny Goodman. Dehlinger’s voice recalls the great swing vocalists, while his energetic, Louis Prima-inspired scatting is both playful and musically precise.

Musicians: Rob Dehlinger (vocals, trumpet, percussion, Hammond B3, foley); Fil Lorenz (tenor saxophone, backing vocals, foley); Steve Steinberg (tenor saxophone, backing vocals); Carroll Ashby (trombone, backing vocals, foley), Josh Workman (guitar); John Cocuzzi (piano); Richard Nelson Hall (piano, foley); Hardy Hemphill (piano); Aaron Germain (upright bass); Danny Gerz (upright bass, backing vocals, foley); Michael Henning (drums, backing vocals, foley), Vince Littleton (drums); Bob Skye (bongos & congas); and Adam Munoz (foley).

This is music for celebrations, good times, and the dance floor. Through impeccable arrangements and a deep command of vintage style, Mr. Dehlinger shows that joyful, timeless swing never goes out of fashion. The party is here. Have a great time.
