New Country: M Callahan — ‘Working Man’

M Callahan — Working Man

Singer/songwriter M Callahan’s new 6-track EP, Working Man, has restored my faith in country music.

You see, I’m one of those country music fans that remains loyal to the ever-evolving genre no matter how difficult it gets — yet deep inside I’d be perfectly content is everyone who says they’re country really was country. With M Callahan, it took about half a song for me to sigh with relief and turn the volume up. His tunes capture the essence of the rural experience, while his lyrics always present his own unique point of view. While he is instantly relatable, he is also original. He’s also been blessed with a vocal instrument that is exactly why the town of Nashville became Nashville in the first place.

The EP’s title track captures everything that is so right about M Callahan’s songs. Supported by musicians as nuanced as he is, Callahan delivers this hearfelt-yet-slightly-restrained contemporary tribute to the values of the working man who treasures family above all. Kinda puts M Callahan right there in line with Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Keith Whitley. And if that doesn’t restore your faith in country music, nothin’ will.

My guess is that an artist as talented as M Callahan has already shown himself to be has a lot more music inside. I’m already looking forward to his next project. And the one after that.
